A preclinical study of Bifidobacterium longum strains (35624, strain A) and DPC6315 (strain B) was carried out to understand the effect of the strains on the clinical score in a murine model of arthritis. The ‘disease control’ (blue line) shows the natural course of the condition over the study period. The first graph shows that both Bifidobacterium longum strains A and B (red and green) were effective at significantly reducing the clinical score (severity) of arthritis, when subjects were given them individually. However, in a follow up study, when subjects were given strains A+B combined (purple triangle), there were no improvements to the clinical score, with the purple lines tracking along the blue disease control line.
